Matilda Tshuma leads a group of women in Matabeleland who have learned how to weave the coloured wires from the inside of telephone cables into vibrant baskets with intricate patterns. Zig zags, swirls, spirals and blurs of colour make these baskets truly unique. Zimbabwean baskets are woven "freehand" and have a more organic shape than the South African ones which are often woven around a mould. Unfortunately the situation in Zimbabwe of late has meant that although we used to buy our wire from the cable manufacturer here they are not able to supply us, so we currently import the wire from South African manufacturers. WE DO NOT USE WIRE FROM STOLEN TELEPHONE LINES!
